Flash XML Timeline Component

This Flash component is a scrollable timeline for showing historical events. The events are specified in an XML file, and can contain any range of years, any number of historic events, and both text and/or images associated with each event. The text or graphic descriptions can contain active hypertext links to other pages. The component was developed in OpenLaszlo and is a standard Flash SWF file that can be embedded into any webpage.

In the small demo below, the timeline shows some events from American history.

Here's some sample XML that defines events in the timeline:

The timeline is fully configurable with the following parameters:

the width and height of the timeline;
the increment in years to show for each "tick" in the timeline;
the display width of each timeline "tick";
the timeline events, including the date, text and/or image, and optional hypertext link for each event;
an flag for whether the event description should appear above or below the timeline, to avoid events over-writing each other;
the starting and ending year for the timeline;
the background color, timeline color, and text font color; and
the text fontsize.

Release Notes

05/11/2009 -- allow full MM/DD/YYYY date definitions, for multiple events within the same year; also new feature allowing event descriptions to appear either above or below the timeline.
